●What is the Pyrethrum daisy?
The Pyrethrum daisy has long history, having been used as a natural insecticide since the early 19th century. Cultivation of these flowers in Japan began in the Meiji period, and having insecticidal properties as well as being safe for people and animals, they provide a substance used in mosquito coils and other familiar products. Now, the usage of Pyrethrum daisies has declined in recent years with the push for cheaper synthetic chemicals. However, the development of resistance to synthetic chemicals by insects has repeatedly been a problem, as producers scramble to keep pace with pests (nature).
On the other hand, Pyrethrum daisies contain dozens of different substances that have a synergistic effect with the main ingredient, natural pyrethrin, and the chemical resistance developed by pests against synthetic chemical insecticides doesn’t appear to protect them against this plant. Furthermore, the Pyrethrum daisy decomposes rapidly in the presence of sunlight following dispersal - two to three days, depending on the weather, which makes them a safer option.
